Citizenship routes and their tradeoffs
The National Development Fund, or NDF, is the named contribution route. A contribution serves a different purpose from acquiring an investment asset: you should evaluate it as part of the cost of obtaining citizenship, rather than as capital you expect to recover through a later sale.
Real estate and business investment are other routes to examine. The attraction of holding an asset needs to be weighed against its commercial quality, liquidity and programme conditions. A property can qualify for a citizenship application while still being unsuitable for your investment objectives. Developer quality and the market for an eventual resale deserve their own assessment.
Current qualifying amounts, eligible projects, family treatment and government charges must be confirmed for the selected route. You should compare the complete commitment for your household, rather than assuming a headline contribution covers every applicant and every required charge.
Antigua & Barbuda permits dual nationality and does not require you to renounce an existing citizenship. Your existing country's rules still matter, especially if it restricts additional citizenship or imposes disclosure requirements.
Practical advantages
- The programme provides a defined citizenship application framework built around contribution or investment, rather than requiring you to build an operating business as your main objective.
- A common-law legal environment may be familiar if you already work with English-language legal documents.
- Additional citizenship can expand travel options, subject to each destination's entry rules and your circumstances.
- Caribbean Community membership provides a regional context for mobility and establishment, with the applicable rights and conditions needing individual review.
For travel planning, check your actual itinerary. The usefulness of a passport depends on where you need to go and what you intend to do there.
Requirements and realistic timing
The programme involves background checks and financial due diligence. You need a clear account of your identity, personal history and source of funds. Unexplained inconsistencies can create questions that an investment payment does not resolve. Family applications also require attention to the status and documentation of each person you propose to include.
A physical-presence condition requires 5 days within 5 years of citizenship being granted (as of 2026; confirm current rules), subject to applicable programme conditions and exemptions. You should confirm how it applies to each applicant and how compliance is recorded. A short visit requirement is still an obligation that needs practical planning.
Document preparation, due diligence, the investment stage and issuance do not necessarily move at the same pace. Obtain current processing expectations for your application and avoid treating an indicative timeline as a guaranteed passport delivery date. Keep existing travel documents available while the application is unresolved.
Limitations and common misconceptions
Antigua & Barbuda has limited on-island wealth management infrastructure compared with larger international financial centres. Citizenship does not guarantee that a local or overseas bank will accept you. Banks make their own decisions about your residence, tax status, wealth and proposed transactions.
International information exchange and FATCA obligations remain relevant. If you are a US person, obtaining another passport does not remove your US tax or foreign-account reporting obligations. More generally, citizenship and tax residence are separate legal questions.
This passport does not provide US ESTA eligibility. European or British short-stay access also should not be confused with permission to settle or work. Destination rules can change, and Caribbean citizenship programmes face continuing international scrutiny.
Investment routes add commercial risks to the citizenship decision. Property can be difficult to sell, and an investment selected mainly for programme eligibility may not suit your portfolio. Consider those risks separately from whether your citizenship application is accepted.
Who fits and how advice helps
Antigua & Barbuda may fit you if additional citizenship addresses specific travel or family needs and you can satisfy the financial and personal checks. It is less suitable if you primarily want a corporate tax structure, sophisticated local private banking or automatic US access.
FNC evaluates the programme case by case, reviewing your existing citizenships, household, travel priorities and funding position. Advice should identify the relevant route, total commitment and continuing obligations before you make an irreversible contribution or investment.
General information, not legal, tax or investment advice. Your qualified advisers must confirm the rules for your circumstances. No banking, residence, citizenship or tax outcome is guaranteed. US citizenship carries continuing tax and reporting obligations.
