Vanuatu

Vanuatu may be worth considering if your objective is an additional citizenship and you are comfortable evaluating its practical limits alongside the application route. The value depends on your nationality, family circumstances and actual travel needs. A passport should solve a defined problem in your life; it does not automatically provide new banking access, establish tax residence or replace the permissions needed to enter another country.

Citizenship programme options

Vanuatu's citizenship routes include the Development Support Programme, or DSP, and the Capital Investment Immigration Plan, or CIIP. These are distinct programme frameworks. Their eligibility, contribution or investment terms and application requirements should be checked against the route you intend to use.

The DSP's stated non-refundable contribution minimum is USD 130,000 (as of 2026; confirm current rules) for a single applicant and USD 150,000 (as of 2026; confirm current rules) for a couple. The stated family contribution is USD 180,000 (as of 2026; confirm current rules) for a family of four (as of 2026; confirm current rules). These are programme contribution figures, not an all-inclusive application budget or a guarantee of approval.

Family composition and dependant eligibility need to be established before relying on a category. A contribution under the DSP is non-refundable in nature, so it should not be compared with an asset you expect to sell later. Obtain the applicable payment and refund terms before committing funds.

The Citizenship Commission conducts background checks. Nationality, criminal history, sanctions exposure and source of funds can affect whether an application can proceed. A willingness to make the contribution does not remove those checks or create an entitlement to citizenship.

Timing and physical presence

You should plan around document preparation, due diligence, the citizenship decision, oath requirements and passport issuance as separate stages. The timetable depends on a complete and acceptable application and the authorities handling it. Avoid making an urgent journey depend on an unissued passport.

The citizenship route does not require you to establish ongoing residence in Vanuatu. That can matter if you want to retain your existing home and business base. Application formalities still need to be confirmed for your circumstances, and citizenship should not be confused with proof of living in the country.

Travel usefulness needs a personal check

Assess the destinations you actually visit rather than relying on a headline count of accessible countries. Entry permissions, permitted length of stay and the purpose of travel can differ. Business meetings, employment and a long stay may each require a different permission even where a short visit is possible.

Do not base the decision on an assumption of unrestricted European travel. European access restrictions are a material limitation, and destination rules can change. Check each important destination and transit point before comparing the passport with your existing travel position.

An additional citizenship also needs to be compatible with your current nationality rules. Your wider plan should address which passport you use, how personal records remain consistent and what information banks and other institutions require.

Tax and banking are separate questions

Vanuatu does not impose personal income tax, corporate income tax, capital gains tax, wealth tax or inheritance tax. Those local features do not settle liabilities in a country where you continue to live, work, manage a business or retain other taxable connections.

Common misconceptions

Citizenship alone should not be treated as a change in tax residence. If your objective includes a tax change, assess your actual residence and existing obligations separately. A passport also provides no basis for assuming that financial accounts or their owners fall outside reporting requirements.

The domestic banking market is limited compared with major international financial centres. A citizenship application and a banking application address different questions. Banks still assess identity, source of wealth, residence, business activity and expected transactions. You may need an independent banking strategy based on where your money is earned and used.

Fit, limitations and preparation

  • Vanuatu can merit examination when an additional nationality serves a specific family or mobility objective.
  • Ongoing relocation is not the central requirement of the citizenship route.
  • Travel restrictions and changes to programme conditions can affect its long-term usefulness.
  • It is a poor fit if your plan depends on guaranteed processing speed, unrestricted travel or automatic tax residence.

Prepare identity and family records, nationality details, source-of-funds evidence and a list of the destinations that matter to you. Explain any deadline and what happens if approval takes longer than expected. FNC reviews the citizenship objective, eligibility and practical alternatives case by case, with banking and tax questions assessed on their own facts before you commit to a programme.

General information, not legal, tax or investment advice. Your qualified advisers must confirm the rules for your circumstances. No banking, residence, citizenship or tax outcome is guaranteed. US citizenship carries continuing tax and reporting obligations.
